“You’re My Hero”

I watched Wreck it Ralph with my family last night. I forget how good this movie is.

It truly is one of the most underrated Disney movies out there, but it teaches such a valuable lesson: labels don’t mean a doodly dip (to borrow from Fix it Felix’s odd sort of retro language). It also teaches its audience that what your loved ones think about you is truly the most important thing when it comes to self-acceptance. Ralph doesn’t really feel whole until he realizes he has someone who loves him and is proud of him. He didn’t have to win a fancy medal for anyone to be proud of him either; he just had to be a good friend to little Vanellope Von Schweets (most epic name ever).

Doesn’t the whole concept warm your heart? Of course we should all have ambition, but honestly the only thing that truly matters is how we make someone feel. Ralph made Vanellope feel special and loved; for that reason and that reason only, she gave him a handcrafted medal that read “You’re my hero.”

Be a hero to someone today. Make someone feel good, make someone smile. Be there for your family and your loved ones. Know that you are always loved by somebody and you are never alone.

You have heroes and you know who they are. Let’s all try to be that person to somebody else.

And in the meantime, if you’re a Wreck it Ralph type (you know the type: a bull in a china closet), embrace it. If you’re a Fix it Felix (a goody goody), embrace it! You might not know it, but you’re a hero to someone out there.

Just remember the moment when Ralph realizes everything is ok:

Turns out I don’t need a medal to tell me I’m a good guy. Because if that little kid likes me, how bad can I be?”
